According to a 10-year study conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which analyzed about 512,000 patients that had undergone total hip replacement and over 1 million patients that had undergone total knee replacement, increased use of prescription opioids is one of the causes of opioid overdose related deaths in the US.
Knee and hip replacements are some of the most commonly performed orthopedic surgeries in the US. They are done to relieve pain and stiffness caused by arthritis or injury.
Arthritis may occur in either one, two, or all three compartments of the knee. Localized damage to the knee mostly occurs in the medial compartment, less commonly in the lateral and patellofemoral compartments of the knee.
