The appropriate use of opioids in surgical patients can be a challenge for surgeons to manage. Engaging the patients throughout the process is critical to decreasing opioid consumption.

Every day, 115 Americans die after overdosing on an opioid. The rate of opioid-related deaths increased nearly threefold between 2002 and 2015, and heroin-related overdose deaths increased more than six times over during that same time period. The Journal of Arthroplasty just published in the December edition, our research on the role that volume plays in outcomes after total hip and knee replacement. In the latest December issue of Arthroplasty Today, they published our research on, “Intraoperative chlorhexidine irrigation to prevent infection in total hip and knee arthroplasty”. During surgery, we routinely use irrigation to clean out the surgical wound.
